[9/27]
While working on my genius hour project and looking at sprites from the base game I chose, I found a new website that I could use to create the sprites for my game. Pixilart seems likes an easy to use website, which unlike Piskel, actually teaches the user about each tools and their function. I am very excited to begin working on sprites and I hope to finish the basics of coding by the end of next week, My plan after I finish learning how to do basic coding, I will begin to work on the story and type of game, nothing crazy, but not boring. I already have ideas for my main character, and I am very excited to show her off. [10/1] Over the weekend, I began testing some of my art skills on sprites from an existing game called Crypt of the Necrodancer. So far, I'd say the project is coming along slowly but surely and I'm very proud of the amount of work I've put in so far!

Week 1 is almost over and I'm beginning to realize that this is going to take A LOT longer than I first anticipated.
In our first full hour to work on our projects in class on Wednesday, I sat and listened to videos about where to start when learning how to code, and I've began to learn the first bits of coding. I also studied GIFs of player models from the game that is the base for the game I plan on creating, Scott Pilgrim vs The World. I've worked with modding and pixel art for games such as Crypt of the Necrodancer and Stardew Valley, which are games where sprites are fairly easy to edit. Though, as I watched a GIF of Ramona Flowers swinging her hammer, I noticed the way her sprite moved and I believe I have a fairly decent understanding on how I want the characters to look and move. I'm still worrying about finding a mentor, though. I plan on meeting Mr. Lee either Tuesday or Wednesday after school. I talked to Mrs. Dunn to see if she had any resources I could use and she suggested I go see him sometime soon, and I plan to. Overall, I'm enjoying the project so far but I am a bit anxious about the time frame. In my English class, we are starting a project call 'Genius Hour' and some of you may know what that is. For those of you who don't, Genius Hour is a 12 week project where we either learn a skill or increase our abilities with one specific area of our lives. Whether this be finally getting around to learning how to code, or getting better at sewing to make blankets for those who need it.
My goal for this 12-week period is to learn the basics of coding and using those skills to make a basic flash game. My short-term goal is to spend about 2 hours every night coding for the next 2-3 weeks. I understand that time is a big issue in this project, as I already know that coding can be pretty hard and could be even harder for someone who is a bit slower when it comes to grasping new skills. I’ve been putting off learning how to code for several years, so I feel like using this Genius Hour time to finally get around to it could do some good for me in the long-run. If I don’t finish the game in time, at least I learned how to code and that can be an impressive skill to have on a resume. I wouldn’t define my success by the game, but rather how good I got at coding in such a short time frame, and I think a lot of people wouldn’t consider it from that point of view. I believe that in the end, this project will become hard at times but I have faith in myself. I know that if I put effort into it, like using hours I usually spend on gaming to get some extra coding practice in instead. It’s my dream to make a video game that is beautiful in graphics AND game play, so it could make people very happy like other games had done to me. |
